Q U E S T I O N S
Please note: This is a German website, reflecting the situation in Germany :-)
The legal situation examined in the following applies only to German law !

Is naked cycling illegal ?
Could I end up in jail ?

No !

Naked bicycle riding in Germany is not illegal.
My survey so far shows that this is also the case in Switzerland and Austria.
[note: In Switzerland you may encounter inconviences when practising nudism in public, but prosecution pressure has already reliefed. ]

Nobody here is thrown in jail just because he exercises in the nude.

But isn't it still an offense (a 'public annoyence')
if I'm naked ?

Where did you get that idea ?

If you plan to commit an 'offense to public order', you'd better stay home ;-).

As long as you practise good manners, nudity while doing sports is no offense.

The legal situation examined in the following paragraphs applies only to Germany !

In extreme cases, where a formal complaint is filed by angry folks against someone who commits a 'seriously indicent act' under German administrative law § 118 OWiG, an admonition could be imposed.
The first time, it costs hardly more than a parking ticket.

In administrational justice it is very controversal, wether, and in what cases, nude cycling is, indeed, a 'seriously indecent act', which 'offends the public', a condition necessary for legal prosecution.
In the majority of cases, it clearly is not, and that's the way it's handled in practice.

Even in case of a formal complaint, which is hardly ever encountered by the many naked cyclists who continue to ride naked, a simple decision is ussually made on the spot in favor of the cyclist, without admonition.

Envious and harassed people, who, unfortunately, may be met at every turn, will try to proceed with their prosecution mania more diligently than will be the police patrol who is eventually called to investigate.
First, police know that naked cyclists are highly mobile and, second, the police usually classify those 'acts' as marginal.
Acting on their own initiative, the police only get involved as a last resort.

For myself, I have cycled past police and border patrols again and again and the reaction has been surprise and amusement, but never a personal check.

In some communities, very rare, being nude in public is explicitly prohibited by municipal ordinance. But nobody is obliged to study all the local ordinances for every community, in which he may find himself.
Usually, riding naked in those areas is inappropriate anyway (city center, etc.). At worst, the local police in that jurisdiction could request that you put on the minimum to comply with the ordinance. on this ground.
That should be acceptable, I would think.

1000s and 10.000s of kilometers have been ridden nude with no legal offences.

..and when I ride naked past children ?

That's a far cry from pedophilia, at least in Germany :-)

Children already know from television, billboards, and, if they're lucky, from their family and from school, how a naked human looks like.
If they encounter one in real life, they're delighted!
Check it out !

Children never are violated simply by seeing people without clothes - as long, as they show good manners.
Even though some parents may act like it.

Aren't there simply other problems with people ?

Not at all !

The majority of reactions are surprisingly positive or at least neutral.

That's because people don't see a naked cyclist long enough to form a complete reaction.
Many observers aren't sure: Is he wearing anything or not ?
By the time they figure it out, you're long gone!

If you do not provoke them, or behave badly - for example run over people in the street - you won't get into trouble.

If, on occasion, unfriendly comments are made: just ignore them and keep on going.
It works !

You'll see, when you are nude you'll have a lot more friendly contacts than when you ride fully dressed.

How do I really start riding naked ?

No problem, my young friend !

You need a bicycle, that rides well, a pannier or a bag for your clothes (yes, you'll need clothes :-) ) and enough beverage.
And you should know, where you want to go: perhaps somewhere you often ride your bike.
May be not where you shop for the weekend, but out in the green countryside ;-).

You'll need to organize your ride into a naked and a (slighly) dressed part.
If you want to ride naked door to door (from your house and back): that's possible too !

A beginner feels his way step by step, and chooses a less popular road in the country.
He decides on a tranquil spot to undress, from which he will ride totally naked. The pants are tossed into the pack.
When he's finished the chosen route and reached the 'dressing spot', he puts the pants back on again :)

It helps to determine these points before you start riding.
Lucky is, who can ride naked from his houseand back without having to find dressing places, for example who lives at edge of town.

Once you've had your first country ride, you can carefully risk street traffic.
Obey the traffic laws !

Gradually one can venture riding into villages and towns.
Self-assurance grows greater and greater ;-)

Isn't it cold ?

That depends.

In Germany naked cycling is for summertime.
It's nice when the air temperature is 25-26 ° Celsius (77-79 ° Fahrenheit) or higher.
Lying or crouching naked in the sun one can certainly withstand lower temperatures and stay warm.
But, when riding, airflow is added to the real wind and then it only feels warm while the air is really mild.

Without the sun, one wants rather higher temperatures.

When it's cooler, one can still endure for a while, but I find it simply lacks authenticity when one, then undressed, tumbles through the world.
Naked cycling then becomes, somehow, unnatural. (My opinion!)

Now it's pretty clear from this long rambling that, for the whole time when riding textile-free, the weather conditions will rule.
But that must not discourage anyone from riding naked, as long as it's good and warm, and for cooler stretches to have a sweatshirt, proper pants or even a jacket nearby.
Naked cycling should certainly not become chilly acrobatics, but rather to be a warm pleasure.

For myself, for touring, when I want to ride naked, I alsways take a change of clothes that will cover all probable temperatures, for example, after sunset.
Naked cycling is the finest - but with clothes one can go further :-)

That way I'll burn my back !

Oh, yes ! The sun is dangerous !

When you start cycling in the Spring, or if you only have a light or medium tan, you must coat your neck, shoulders and back with high protection sunscreen; SPF 8 or higher.

Exposure of these body parts is extremely high when cycling, especially when using drop handlebars. Unprotected or inadequately protected you can get a nasty sunburn right in the first half hour !

Sun protection must be renewed during the ride, because it sweats off. Don't forget the forehead and nose !

All those heroes who claim, they don't protection, because they don't use it on the balcony or because the sun isn't that hot today realize their mistake the first time out.

People with fair skin, who don't tan well, might better stay away from naked cycling. The sun will eat you up!

Thanks a lot !

Am I a traffic hazard if I ride naked in traffic ?

As long as you obey the traffic laws and avoid certain situations, you are not a harzard !

Because you don't have anything on, in the daytime you are a real eyecatcher for car drivers.
Nevertheless, car drivers should not be distracted in such a way, they loose their concentration on the road or run off a curve.

Therefore, stick to these rules :

  • Always use the bike paths.
Never ride on the road outside town, except small lanes, which are visible from a  f a r  distance.

  • N e v e r   ride on the roadway of narrow, curving sidestreets that will eventually become busy !

Drivers could become distracted when they first see you, and a very dangerous situation could ensue when they overtake and pass a cyclist in such places.
This happens especially with young inexperiencend drivers, who are excited at most by the spectactle.
By such behavior you are endangering road traffic as well as yourself !

Nonetheless, riding in the roadway in town, if there is no bike path, is not a problem, because car drivers always have to be prepared for traffic surprises.

At major intersections in town you might become a traffic hazard, if you ride nude in the center lanes, for example the left turn lane.
Car drivers who can see you may slow down or stop to watch and to comment on you.

  • Always use the far right lane and make your left turn by using the crosswalk and the pedestrian signal (if you dare to ride naked there.. ;-) ).

  • Because you are particularly noticable in daytime traffic, fulfill your adult obligation, and strictly obey traffic laws !

  • You'll soon learn to stop at traffic lights, and to endure being stared from all directions.
On the other hand, you can vary your course to avoid traffic lights by using side streets, bridges and underpasses.

  • Ride politely and respect less hardy road users !
There is no greater provocation than a naked assed cyclist, who darts across a place filled with pedestrians: they are all doubly shocked !!

  • When in doubt, yield to oncoming traffic and pedestrians.
Don't alarm passersby with strident bell ringing. Give notice in a gentle manner.

  • Politeness makes cycling easier !

Must / can I ride barefoot ?

Much discussed !

You are not required to cycle barefoot even when you're wearing nothing else.
Wear the shoes you would otherwise wear for cycling.

Generally, it's a good idea to protect your feet with shoes (sandals) while riding, because they are pretty exposed to minor injuries.

Anyone who tries to ride barefoot has to realize that power transmission from the bare sole to the pedals isn't as good as with shoes on. Pedals press too hard into the sole.
Mountain bike pedals are no good at all.

If you find pedaling barefoot is quaint, you'll want to install flat platform pedals.

Are other clothes allowed ?

A helmet or other equipment is not really needed when to ride naked.

Ride as carefully you can go without protective clothing.

Nevertheless, a hat is allowed in strong sun or at your first Spring ride.

Since I've been riding naked, I can't do 'it' as well ! (gentlemen)

Delicate! Delicate!

A well-kept secret, but well known to all diligent long distance cyclists:
After a longer ride zaps your crotch under your cock, you get the feeling it's lost or broken off ;) - and you want to look for it to see if it's still there.

This typical symptom is  n o t  encountered exclusively when riding nude, but on all long bike rides.

Bearing the entire body weight on the soft tissues of the crotch, especially the dynamic load (the impact of body weight on the saddle ridge while riding on rough ground, which can be a lot more than the body weight alone), can cause the blood circulation and nerves to penis to be pinched off.

When riding with sturdy clothes, the crotch is sometimes is cushioned by wrinkles in the underwear or outer clothing, or by padding in cyclig shorts.
Riding nude, even that buffer is missing.

The numbness one is feeling in cock when the veins and nerves in the spongy bodies are squeezed eases off after a few minutes by taking a short break or standing up while pedaling.
That way sweat running down your butt can also evaporate from the saddle.

Bearing the body weight on the crotch region can cause not only short term numbness, but also long term erectile dysfunction, especially on longer bike rides (about 50-100 kilometers / 30-60 miles on a regular basis).
Altough you are pretty horny, your best friend isn't rising to the occasion during or after cycling.
This can persist for a few hours and it may fill you with anxiety for a while.

But the numbness will always subside itself.
It affects dressed sport cyclists as well.
Naturally, it's also a matter of individual constitution. A 19-year-old boy shouldn't have as much trouble as a 50-year-old man ;-) .

Long distance riders during a holiday tour or in club sporting events can experience a lack in virility during the active cycling season.
4 weeks after ceasing cycling everything functions normally :)

Remedies:

  • Use a spung seat post or frame with suspension

  • Experiment with saddle height and tilt

  • If nothing seems to help, try another shape of saddle

  • Saddles shaped to protect spongy tissues in several varieties (even for women) are available in retail bike shops for affordable prices now, because they are trend.
A saddle horn of the type 'with a hole' is also a good sweat ventilator - you no longer slide around in a soup.
    Check it out !

Just a short test ride won't really tell what the results will be. You'll have to risk the money and try it for longer period.

Unfortunately man is not designed for riding a bike, as we can see. It's still a relatively artificial means of locomotion.
Nonetheless, it's the most natural of the artificial !

I always get horny from naked cycling :)
Fortunately, nobody has the least idea.

Now, now, dear friend !

We all know this too well:
The sun on our skin - the warm airstream caressing our body - we in full flight through floodlit nature..
Who wouldn't get horny from that ?

God, the Lord has given us horniness, and a splendid body which is hungry to run free under the vault of heaven.

Chill out, dude, and channel your elation to the right place ;-)

No matter what I do - I never get horny when riding naked :( - What am I doing wrong ?

Oh dear! Perhaps your just a victim of a 'temporary cyclist impotency'.

Getting horny isn't the most important aspect of nude cycling.
Naked cycling offers so many other enriching feelings and experiences. Simply take things as they come.
When it no longer brings you joy, you can always quit..

At another time, go watch an erotic movie on German televison :)
